Chapter 8

Ch. 8 #2 How has the move to digital information affected the communication tools important to both the business world and life outside of work? It has brought a lot of new opportunities and new styles of work ethic in the work world. Although the change might have been hard on some companies due to the new age of technology I’m sure it has made keeping data a lot easier and neater. It also helps working from home a lot easier and more convenient, since information can now be shared a lot easier and faster. This makes copyrighting a lot easier to do though. I feel digital information has make a very good impact to the business world. How has the “digital age” affected you in your life? The digital age has made my life a lot easier and more interesting. I remember buying a big cd player and tape player to take on school trips with me. Where now all my music is on a little iPod that can fit in my pocket. I love how mow I can plug my iPod into the car and take all my music with me to listen to, instead of making music CD’s all the time. It’s also made taking my daughter to run erring’s a lot easier too. She can watch movies and play games on my phone while I’m doing things or talking to people. Explain at least 2 changes that have brought us a digital lifestyle. One change that has brought us to a digital lifestyle is that we now rely on GPS on our phone or a GPS system to go places, you rarely see people with maps anymore. Another change is that we now rely on computers for almost everything. When you go to a doctor’s office most of them use handheld laptops to take notes on your charts or to update your file of your health. We also rely on cell phones we use our cell phones daily, whereas now a lot of people don’t even have a house phone, the number they use is to their cell phone so they can always be reached. We’ve changed our lifestyle a lot thanks to the new technology that has been introduced to us, even down to the way we order food.

Page 266 #4 and where to get cloud storage

What are the computer's main storage devices, and how can I evaluate whether they match my needs? Different storage devices are hard drives, an SSD drive, a flash drive, CD, and DVD drives. Hard drives have the largest storage capacity of any storage device and are most economical. The newer SSD drives are known to have the fastest access time and data transfer rate of all nonvolatile storage options. Portable flash drives make it easy to transfer data between computers. If you need more storage because you realize the amount of storage your software needs, you can install additional drives, externally or internally. Microsoft Dos

After watching the Microsoft video, I am so happy to be in the new millennium times. I remember elementry apple computers looking like the windows 3.1 with the big floppy disk. But now computers are a lot easier to use and more secured back then there was no login page or different users for the computer which ment anyone can use it and see any personal documents you had saved on it. Also I don't think you could of uploaded pictures on the computers back then because everything was green and black and the command drops where very limited. I remeber using windows 95 and 98 growing up. But as computers advance, more things are added to it, different shortcuts are added, and there more efficent to use no matter if its for leisure, school, or work related. I can only imagine what new things windows will have within the next five years.

Desktops Obsolete?

In a presentation in Dublin, Ireland in March 2010, Google sales chief Jim Haley stated that desktops would be irrelevant in three years (SiliconRepublic.com). Smartphones, notebooks, and the amount of information available online will converge to create a different kind of future than what we’ve known, according to Haley. Do you agree? Why or why not? What impact would that have on the types of hardware and software that are the most in demand? I believe it won't be irrevlevant, but I do believe smartphones and labtops will be in higher demand. You can rebuild and add on a lot to a desktop, that you can't necessarly do on a laptop or a tablet. For people who do a lot of gaming, or major networking computers used in businesses need a lot of space and speed on a computer that can always be added on to like a desktop. A laptop may be fast but it can't have as much space added to it as a desktop can. Smartphones are in high demand and a lot of people use them for work, but I think a desktop is more reliable. A phone and a notebook are easy to lose but a desktop and kind of hard to misplace. Notebooks and smartphones make working and networking a lot more mobile and convient, but I feel a desktop is a lot more reliable.

Windows Media Player

One application software I use often is windows media player. In windows media player you can play your dvds, listen to music, download music and videos, and burn CDs. Often when I'm at work or somewhere where I can't have a TV I can bring DVDs and watch them on my laptop. I also use windows media player when I want to listen to my cds or music I downloaded. Then if I need to make a copy of a cd or burn music from my computer, I can put it onto a CD and listen to it in the car. If you have a radio in your car or don't have an aux plug to listen to your music Windows Media Player is a good way to make portable CDs to listen too.
